Self-regulation, resilience, and executive functioning: what are they, why are they important, and how do we nurture them? Self-regulation is the ability to regulate one’s behaviours, emotions, and thoughts in response to the demands of a situation. Resilience is our ability to manage, bounce back, and plow through adversity. Executive function is working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. A lack of these developmental aspects can result in undesirable behaviour, social difficulties, and poor educational experiences. As such, we will explore effective strategies children need to nurture and strengthen these areas of development.
