This workshop addresses ways in which Early Childhood Educators can introduce social justice issues to young children. The facilitators think that it is important to decolonize not only ourselves, but our early childhood practices as well. The current colonial approaches to our systems of education do not benefit those of our most vulnerable populations. Children should be seen as capable, and have such wisdom.

Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge on how to engage in social justice issues with children.
  • Explore how to create a curriculum that fosters understanding, belonging and empathy.
  • Appreciate how to bridge difficult topics in ways that children can understand.
  • Recognition of the TRC’s 94 calls to action, in particular that of education.
  • Explain how embracing social justice topics can enrich programming.

Presenter Information
Kristin Webster and Lisa McArthur are both long term senior educators for UBC Child Care Services (Salal and Raven). They are both passionate about decolonizing Early Childhood practices, and bringing social justice issues to their pedagogies within the workplace. In June of 2016, Kristin was honored to receive a BC Child Care award of Excellence in Innovation for her work on Reconciliation and Indigenous place at work.
