Recharging Your Child Care Battery
A Look at Developmentally Appropriate Practice – Kristie Krisher, ECE Dip., BA and Lynda Porter, ECE SN.
Kristie and Lynda have both been in the Early Childhood field for the past 24 years and have experience working with infants and toddlers, 3-5 year olds, in afterschool programs, and with children who require extra support.
What is developmentally appropriate practice? This session will provide an overview of child development; including what children are capable of at different developmental milestones, how the set-up of environments impacts development and how keeping our expectations at a realistic level will help children to be most successful. The information provided can be applied and adapted to meet the needs of all children regardless of ability and/or diagnosis.
A Quick Look at Executive Functioning – Kristie Krisher, ECE Dip., BA and Lynda Porter, ECE SN.
In the summer of 2017, Lynda and Kristie participated in a two-day workshop on Executive Functioning presented by Sarah Ward; who is the co-director of Cognitive Connections and has 20 years’ experience working on the assessment and treatment of executive functioning deficits. This session will give a brief overview of what Executive Functioning (EF) is, what an EF deficit might look like and some practical strategies to implement for children within your child care environment. Get ready for an “ah-ha” moment!!! The information presented just might give you some insight as to why some children do what they do!
Speech and Language – Jacqueline Grieve (M.SC SLP)
Eight years in the field as a Speech Language Pathologist Jacqueline helps families support the communication development of their children from birth to school entry. Services may include education, assessment, and intervention in a variety of settings. Early detection and support can help a child having difficulties with speech and language to match their peers by the time they start kindergarten. Early detection is critical.
Back to Basics – Tami Goetz (ECE Dip.)
As an Early Childhood Educator, Special Needs Educator and Infant/Toddler Educator, with 27 years’ experience working with children and families Tami will talk with you about the foundations of working together as a team and caring for young children. We will explore the understanding of child development and how it applies to programming, expectations, values and beliefs that guide your work and look at the importance of teamwork as it relates to child care, community and the families we support.
