Young children at early ages demonstrate a natural affinity, curiosity, and exploration for poetry through their wordplay and attraction to nursery rhymes, jingles and childhood songs. This wordplay highlights their natural curiosity to manipulate, find meaning and eventually master objects and events in their lives. Exploring sounds, making up non-sense words and repeating rhyming words over and over are all early learning activities that children explore as they develop the early stages of language development and early literacy.
This workshop will revisit young children’s love for poetry and wordplay and to take time to further examine how poetry and rhyme play important roles in supporting young children’s early language and literacy development in our ECE and early learning practice.
Participants will be invited to explore a variety of poetry resources written for both children and adults, discover ways that poetry for young children can be further enhanced with props and activities, and have a little fun with wordplay while sipping soothing cups of tea and exchanging creative ideas together in small work groups.
