Loris Malaguzzi and the schools of Reggio Emilia have a high profile in the world of early childhood education. Some see them as a model that can be taken up and copied. Prof. Moss will argue their importance for another reason: as a provocation to think about what we want for our children, families and communities and what conditions we need to make this happen. Reggio Emilia, in short, reminds us that there are alternatives, so we have choices to make. Malaguzzi and Reggio will be used to explore some of those choices and to confront a major dilemma facing all those who want transformative change: how might this come about and what can we be doing in the interim.

Presenter Information
Prof. Peter Moss is Emeritus Professor of Early Childhood Provision at Institute of Education, University College London. He has written widely about early childhood education, including ‘Beyond Quality in Early Childhood Education and Care’ (with Gunilla Dahlberg and Alan Pence), ‘Ethics and Politics in Early Childhood Education’ (with Gunilla Dahlberg) and ‘Transformative Change and Real Utopias in Early Childhood Education’. He recently collaborated with Reggio Emilia to produce ‘Loris Malaguzzi and the Schools of Reggio Emilia’, a selection of the writings and speeches of Loris Malaguzzi from 1945 to 1993. Peter sees himself as part of a growing movement that contests dominant discourses in early childhood education, and was a co-founder and co-editor of the book series Contesting Early Childhood, which has provided a space for questioning these discourses and exploring alternative perspectives.
