Learn to develop and implement culturally focused curriculum and resources that draw upon local first nations cultures. Locally developed curriculum relies on input from parents and community members and is accepted and used more meaningfully by care givers and child care centres. Learn how having respect for those who share their culture and for the materials that result from those collaborations is one of the keys to successful curriculum expansion.

Kirsten Bevelander and Tara Mclaughlin
Presenter Information
Kirsten Bevelander is a Provincial Child Care Advisor for the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society (BCACCS). The BCACCS Child Care Advisors are a part of the CCRR program and visit child care providers and Aboriginal centers around the province providing support through training, advocacy and sharing of resources. Kirsten has worked with children and families for over 25 years, specializing in toddler care, children with additional needs, literacy learning and Aboriginal early child development and care. She is also an instructor for the Burnaby ECE Continuing Education Program. Tara Mclaughlin is the Regional Indigenous ECD Engagement Coordinator for the Fraser Region. She oversees the Coordination of Many Voices, One Mind formally known as the Fraser Region Aboriginal ECD Network. Many Voices, One Mind is a Network of Indigenous ECD service providers whom span across the Solh Temexw “our sacred land” with well over 23 communities from Tsawwassen First Nation to Boston Bar Boothroyd First Nation. As the Fraser Regional Indigenous Coordinator/ Regional Coordinator she assists the communities in capacity building, Strategic Implementation, Resource Development and so much more. Tara is also the Eastern Fraser Valley’s Success by 6 Regional Coordinator. Tara has been in the ECD field for the past 22 years and is of Irish and Ojibway decent. She is married into the Wei Wai Kum First Nation and has two grown children. She is very passionate about her work and strives to enhance the outcomes for all children and their families.
